Welcome to my Provider page

I hope this serves as a useful introduction to my outpatient psychiatry practice in Lexington, MA, where I am currently accepting new patients.

Whether you’re a primary care physician, therapist, or other mental health professional, you may occasionally see patients whose psychiatric needs extend beyond your current scope of care. When that happens, I welcome the opportunity to help.

My background and process

I am board certified, accredited by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and see adult patients 18 years+ in-person, virtual, and hybrid who are seeking therapy, medication management, or both.

As you know, many of your patients can present with psychiatric complaints in addition to their established medical problems, and you may be at a loss where to refer them for psychiatric treatment. In that event, perhaps I could be of help.

I have 25+ years of experience in the mental health field that includes training in psychology, psychiatry, neuroscience, and psychoanalysis. Integrating these disciplines into my patient care affords me the opportunity to take care of the psychiatric medication issues at hand, and also provide me with a sense of where your patient is psychologically.

I offer a level of personalized care that is warm, in-depth, and tailored to each individual’s needs. Patients receive priority scheduling, experience a privacy that exceeds conventional practices, and have direct access to me 24/7even when I am out of the office. In the psychiatric community this is often referred to as a boutique style of practice.

If you would like to learn more about my practice, and/or discuss a referral, please contact me at 617-470-1805 or email me at tpwasik@gmail.com. You may also encourage your patients to contact me directly for a complimentary phone assessment, or to schedule an initial consultation.

Please note I am an out of network provider, I only accept payment directly, and will provide all of the necessary documentation that your patients need to receive reimbursement.

I look forward to supporting you and your patients in the future, and am grateful for your attention.

Psychiatry

In addition to being board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, I am also a member of professional organizations including the American Psychiatric Association, the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society, the American Psychoanalytic Association, and the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute (BPSI).

Concerns of patients that I commonly treat include:

  • Mood instability, mood disorders

  • Panic attacks, phobias

  • Anxiety, depression, OCD, social anxiety, attention deficit complaints

  • Somatization and related disorders

  • Difficulty adjusting to stress or significant changes in one’s life

  • Life transitions

  • You feel you lack the necessary coping mechanisms to get on in life

  • Problems with work relationships, familial conflict

  • You seem to misinterpret other people’s intentions

  • Work: you hate it, but can’t seem to leave it

  • A poor sense of what you want, what you are feeling and thinking

  • Identity problems: don’t feel like you know who you are

  • Lack of agency: you don’t feel like you’re running your life, your life isn’t progressing, you feel stuck

  • Procrastination

  • Isolation and loneliness

  • Grief and loss

  • You wonder about existence and the meaning of life

  • Relationship issues

  • Problems in romance

  • Sexuality: inhibitions, conflict, diminished drive, sexual dysfunction, anxiety related to sexuality

Psychiatric medicines are one avenue for treating these concerns. In my practice I see patients for medication management alone, psychotherapy alone, or a combination of both. Treatment is dictated by both the nature of the problems and the patient’s desired form of treatment.

Psychotherapy

I practice what is called psychodynamic psychotherapy, which seeks to explore the patient’s past and present in order to gain insight into the patient’s psychological conflicts. Some parts of the patient’s life, past or present, may be harder to talk about than others, so it is incumbent upon me to foster a trusting relationship to help clear a path to a fuller exploration of the patient’s troubles.

Psychoanalysis

Psychoanalysis is a more intensive form of therapy that attempts to understand the unconscious mind. Typically appointments are four times a week, although I would usually begin by meeting the patient one to two times per week, and then comfortably work our way up.

Who can benefit from psychoanalysis? Most patients can benefit from psychoanalysis. It helps one understand the complicated and confusing parts of the self that are often behind repetitive, self-destructive behavior and emotional states. Understanding the deeper parts of ourselves leads to less harmful behavior patterns, a greater sense of contentment, and overall better choices in life.

New patients and insurance

I offer a no fee twenty minute consultation that can be done online, by phone, or in person. This enables your patient to get a feel for my practice, and also see if they feel like I’m someone they would be able to work with.

During that prescreening I want to learn what is troubling your patient, what sort of help they are seeking, whether it be therapy, med management, not sure, and also whether they want to use insurance to cover their charges. From there we would schedule an initial ninety minute appointment in my office. All initial appointments are in person, as are all therapy appointments. Virtual online appointments for medication management patients are possible ninety days after the initial appointment, but that is contingent on the clinical status of the patient. And, certainly, if the patient prefers in person to virtual, then we would continue with in person appointments.

Coordination of care is a high priority, so it’s important to me to keep other doctors informed of any major changes or downturns in a patient’s condition, subject to the usual guidelines regarding confidentiality.

I am an out-of-network provider, which means I only accept payment directly. After your patient makes a payment, I will provide them with a receipt (superbill), and, if your patient’s insurance has out-of-network benefits (PPO, POS, and similar policies), they can submit the superbill for reimbursement. The insurances that patients most typically use in my practice are Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Tufts Health (which now includes Harvard Pilgrim), Aetna, Cigna, and Optum (UnitedHealthcare/United Behavioral Health), although occasionally other policies are used.
